Ocean view blanket part 1 (the squares)

A few years ago we traveled across Portugal with our campervan. I immediately fell in love with all the beautiful tiles, the azulejo’s, you see everywhere in Portugal. One day we sat on the beach of a small fishing town, looking at all the boats that brought in fresh fish, moments later we ate that same fish in a small restaurant. And contrary to the complicated designs on most Portugese tiles, here was a sleek and modern design with stripes. Of course I did not take a photo, but I did make some sketches afterwards, because I already saw this blanket in my head! It took me a few years, and a few tries, but finally the Ocean View Blanket is here. Stripes in a few powerful colours and, like with any tiled floor, a mosaic border.

Een aantal jaar geleden reisden we met onze camper door Portugal. Ik was op slag verliefd op al die schitterende tegeltjes, de azulejo’s, die je daar overal ziet. Op een dag zaten we in een klein vissersdorpje met onze voeten in het zand te kijken naar de vissersboten die de verse vis binnenbrachten. Even later zaten we in een klein restaurantje de vis op te eten. En anders dan de meeste Portugese tegeltjes met drukke designs lagen hier strak gestreepte tegels. Uiteraard vergat ik een foto te maken maar ik heb later wel gelijk schetsen gemaakt. Hier wilde ik een deken van maken! Het heeft een aantal jaar mogen duren, maar hier is dan de Ocean View deken. En zoals het hoort bij een tegelvloer heeft deze een echte mozaïek rand. Ik hoop dat je geniet van dit patroon en natuurlijk straks van je heerlijke warme deken!

What do you need for this blanket?

– Crochet hook 4,5 mm en 5 mm
– Yarn. I used Scheepjes Colour Crafter in the following colours and amounts: 1823 Coevorden: 1 skein, 1722 Alphen: 1 skein, 1708 Alkmaar: 3 skeins, 1005 Barneveld: 6 skeins
– Stitch markers, needle and scissors

Laten we beginnen aan deze deken! Wat heb je nodig om deze deken te maken?

– Haaknaald, 4,5 mm en 5mm
– Garen. Ik gebruikte Scheepjes Colour Crafter in de volgende kleuren: 1 bol Coevorden (1823), 1 bol Alphen (1722), 3 bollen Alkmaar (1708), 6 bollen Barneveld (1005)
– Steekmarkeerders, naald en schaar

Sizing / de maten van deze deken

This blanket is crocheted in squares. Each square is about 16,5 cm wide and high. You make a total of 48 squares. Together with the border the blanket will measure about 130 by 165 cm. Depending on your yarn and tension the blanket will be smaller or bigger, this does not matter that much, as long as your squares are really squares 🙂

VoorVoor deze deken haak je in totaal 48 vierkantjes. Elk vierkantje is ongeveer 16,5 cm breed en hoog. Samen met de rand is de deken uiteindelijk ongeveer 130 bij 165 cm groot. Als je ander garen gebruikt of net iets strakker of losser haakt kan de deken uiteraard een andere maat krijgen. Dit is niet zo erg, zolang je maar zorgt dat je vierkantjes echt vierkant zijn 🙂

Pattern for the square / patroon voor het vierkant

1. Chain 3, make an sc in the 3rd ch from the hook, ch 3 and turn

2. Make 1 sc, 1 ch, 1 sc in the chain-2 space from step 1, ch 3 and turn

3. Make 1 sc, 1 ch in the chain-1 space from step 2, make 1 sc, 1 ch, 1 sc in the chain-3 space, ch 3 and turn

4. Keep repeating this pattern: 1 sc and 1 ch in the chain spaces, in the chain-3 spaces at the end you crochet 1 sc, 1 ch, 1 sc. Chain 3 and turn.

5. Keep repeating step 4 until you are at row 23. At the end of this row you crochet 1 sc and 1 hdc (so without a ch in between!) in the ch-3 space at the end. After this we start decreasing. Chain 2 and turn.

6. Skip the first two stitches and crochet in the first chain space. Make 1 sc and 1 ch in that first space and repeat this (1 sc and 1 ch) in every chain space until the second from last. In this chain space you crochet 1 sc, directly followed by a sc in the last chainspace (so no chain in between). Chain 2 and turn.

7. Keep repeating step 6 untill the square is almost finished. At the end of the row where you only crochet 2 sc after turning, you crochet 2 chain, turn and make an ss in the ch 2 space.

8. With white, crochet a round around the square. You crochet 21 sc on each side of the square and 1 sc, 1 ch, 1 sc in every corner. So in total there is a total of 23 sc on each side of the square.

1. Haak 3 lossen, maak een vaste in de 3e losse vanaf de naald, haak 3 lossen en keer.

2. Haak 1 vaste, 1 losse, 1 vaste in de 2lossenruimte uit de vorige stap, 3 lossen en keren

3. Haak 1 vaste, 1 losse in de lossenruimte uit stap 2, haak 1 vaste, 1 losse, 1 vaste in de 3-lossenruimte, 3 lossen en keren

4. Blijf dit patroon herhalen: 1 vaste + 1 losse in de lossenruimtes, in de 3 lossenruimtes aan het einde haak je 1 vaste + 1 losse + 1 vaste, daarna 3 lossen en keren.

5. Blijf stap 4 herhalen tot je bij toer 23 bent. Aan het einde van deze toer haak je 1 vaste + 1 half stokje (dus zonder losse ertussen!) in de 3 lossenruimte aan het einde. Hierna gaan we minderen. Haak 2 losse en keer.

6. Sla de eerste steken over en haak in de 1e lossenruimte 1 vaste en 1 losse, blijf dit herhalen tot de één na laatste lossenruimte. In de één na laatste lossenruimte haak je 1 vaste, direct gevolgd door een vaste in de laatste lossenruimte. Haak 2 lossen en keer.

7. Blijf dit herhalen tot het vierkant bijna helemaal af is. Eindig bij de toer waarin je na de 2 lossen en keren alleen 2 vasten hebt gehaakt. Haak daarna 2 lossen, keer en maak een halve vaste in de 2 lossenruimte van de vorige toer.

8. Haak een rand van vasten om het vierkant. Haak 21 vasten langs de rand en in de hoeken haak je 1 vaste + 1 losse + 1 vaste. In totaal heb je dus langs elke rand 23 vasten.

Colour changes / kleurwisselingen

When you are crocheting each square you will need to change colour a couple of times. This is how I have done that in this blanket: the last stitch before the new colour (which is the last sc in the last row of the old colour) I don’t finish completely in the old colour. For the last pull through I drop the old colour and make the pull through with the new colour. Make the chains in the new colour, turn and continue with the pattern. Weave in the ends.

Tijdens het haken zul je een aantal keer van kleur moeten wisselen. Ik doe dat als volgt: de laatste steek van de rij vóór de nieuwe kleur haak ik niet helemaal af. De laatste lus doorhalen haal ik al door met de nieuwe kleur. Daarna haak je de lossen met de nieuwe kleur, keer je het werk en haak je verder.

Each square is worked in the same way. Below is a schedule of the colour changes. Start in the bottom left corner and work towards the top right corner. For the amount of rows and the colour changes you follow this schedule.

Elk vierkant heeft dezelfde opbouw. Als je naar het schema hieronder kijkt begin je in de hoek links onderin en eindig je rechts bovenin. Voor het kleurverloop volg je het schema.

Starting in the bottom left corner / begin in de hoek linksonder:

5 rows white / 5 toeren wit

3 rows in colour 1 / 3 toeren in kleur 1

6 rows white / 6 toeren in wit

3 rows in colour 2 / 3 toeren in kleur 2

6 rows white (after this the decrease starts) / 6 toeren in wit (hierna begin je weer met minderen)

3 rows in colour 3 / 3 toeren in kleur 3

6 rows white / 6 toeren in wit

3 rows in colour 4 / 3 toeren in kleur 4

6 rows white / 6 toeren in wit

3 rows in colour 5 / 3 toeren in kleur 5

The colour combinations / de kleurcombinaties

In total you crochet 48 squares in 20 different colour combinations. In the table below you see all the different colour combinations, and in which colour you crochet the different coloured sections 1-5 of the schedule above and how many squares you make in this combination. (G = yellow, DB = dark blue, LB = light blue)

In totaal haak je 48 vierkantjes in 20 verschillende kleurencombinaties. In onderstaande tabel zie je voor alle 20 vierkantjes in welke kleuren je de kleurenbanen 1-5 kunt haken om dezelfde deken te haken. (G=geel, DB=donkerblauw, LB=lichtblauw)

To explain this table a bit more below is an example square: The square on this photo is square C, colour 1 is yellow, colour 2 and 3 dark blue, colour 4 light blue and colour 5 is dark blue. This square is crocheted 2 times.

Om deze tabel wat meer uit te leggen staat hieronder een voorbeeld vierkant. Dit vierkant is vierkant C, kleur 1 is geel, kleur 2 en 3 donkerblauw, cleur 4 is licht blauw en kleur 5 is donkerblauw. Dit vierkant haak je 2 keer.

Lay out of the blanket / de deken samenstellen

Below is an graphic of the blanket with the letters from the table above to indicate the position of each square.

Crochet the squares together with a slip stitch in the back loops. To do this you place the two squares you are joining with the right sides together. The back loops are the loops on the outside. Make a slip stitch through both loops together.

Hieronder staat een weergave van de deken met de letters uit de tabel hierboven om te laten zien waar elk vierkantje moet komen. Haak de vierkantjes aan elkaar met een halve vaste in de achterste lussen. Om dit te doen leg je de twee vierkantjes die je aan elkaar gaat haken met de goede kanten op elkaar. De achterste lussen zijn dan de buitenste lussen, hier haak je de halve vasten door.
