Stashbusting part 1. Where to start?

So here I was, with all my yarn around me and I wanted to use it all. But where do you start? No worries, this post will help you start with stashbusting in three simple steps!

1. Get organized

Getting organized is definitely the first and most important step when you want to start busting your stash. This means sorting all the yarn you have. I sort it by weight and then fibre and I actually made a list of everything I have sorted on weight, colours and amounts (in grams).

When you have it all sorted it gives you a good overview of everything you have, which yarns you have plenty of and which just some scraps, which is the basis for the next step!

2. Make a plan

I am not talking about a day to day plan, but it is good to plan a little to make sure you really use up everything. So when you have your yarn sorted: decide which pile will be up first to be used. Do you have a lot; maybe you could go for a blanket. If you don’t have that much, think of smaller projects like winterwear. This totally depends on the kind of yarn you have. I have a lot of cotton which I am planning to use for lots of baby toys, while I also have a lot of dk weight which will probably become a blanket.

Anyway, make a small plan and be creative! The reason I firstly sort my yarn by weight is that you can often combine different yarns with the same weight.

3. Don’t be afraid to start

It might sound simple, but this was one of my biggest problems! I was often afraid to use my yarn, because what if I found another project that was better suited for this yarn? Or in the case of expensive hand dyed yarn I thought I needed to use it in really special projects because the yarn was that expensive.

Don’t think like that, just start! Every project is special because it is something you made. And be honest; it would be a shame to let all that beautiful yarn just collect dust because we think we can use it for something else in a few years.
