Waffle baby blanket

The waffle stitch is the perfect stitch for a baby blanket. It is soft and creates a beautiful warm texture, perfect for a baby in any season!

This blanket is made using the front post dc, but I believe with the photo’s and explanation it is a perfect project for every crocheter. Once you’ve discovered the rythm, it is a wonderful mindless make.

Materials needed:

  • Crochet hook size 4 mm
  • 10 balls scheepjes softfun (I used colour 2612 – crepe)
  • Needle, scissors and stitch markers
Gauge
With this yarn, and a 4 mm hook the finished blanket will measure 70 cm x 90 cm
When following the pattern and making a swatch, you should have about 19 stitches and 12 rows in a 10 x 10 cm square.
When your gauge is different, you can try a different hook size. Making this blanket in a different gauge is of course possible, but please note that this means your blanket will be a different size and you will need more (or less, depending on your gauge) yarn.

Some more tips

  • The blanket is crocheted in rows. Turn at the end of each row, without a turning ch.
  • Start each row with a begin dc. The begin dc is always made in the top of the last stitch of the previous row.
  • You start with 144 stitches. If you want to make the blanket bigger or smaller: add or deduct a multiple of 3 stitches from these 144 stitches.
  • The stitch used is a front post double crochet (fpdc). For more information on this stitch and the waffle stitch see my waffle stitch tutorial.

The pattern

  1. Start with a dc foundation row of a multiple of 3 stitches. Click here for an explanation on a foundation row. Don’t know how to make one? start with a multiple of 3 + 2 chains, dc in 3rd ch from the hook and every ch after. Turn
  2. Standing dc in first stitch, fpdc in next stitch, * dc in each of the next 2 stitches, fpdc in next stitch. Keep repeating from * until the end of the row, end with a dc in the last stitch. Turn
  3. Standing dc in first stitch, dc in next stitch, * fpdc in each of the next 2 stitches, dc in the next stitch. Repeat from * until the end of the row, ending with a dc in the last stitch.
  4. Keep repeating step 2 and 3 until you have a 106 rows made.
  5. Crochet a round of sc around the blanket, in the corners make (1sc, ch 2, 1 sc).
  6. Repeat step 5 for two more rounds.
  7. Fasten off and weave in the ends
